Checklist for a Stress-Free Move

When you're moving, packing is a big deal, but there's more to it than just throwing stuff into boxes.  Here are some things to keep in mind when moving:

To-Do List
Jot down all the tasks you need to tackle before moving. Use a weekly planner to spread them out and make sure everyone knows who's doing what.

Moving Company Business
Get your moving company locked in early. Get a few quotes, make sure they're legit, and confirm the details a week before the big day. Make sure you know what their insurance covers. Don't wait until your stuff's on the truck to figure out what's protected. Read all the papers they give you to see what's covered and think about getting extra coverage if needed.

Packing Tips
Collect boxes early and start packing stuff you won't need right away. Label everything clearly, number the boxes. Keep a list of what's where and don't pack stuff you don't really want.

Tell Everyone You Moved
Give a heads-up to your bank, creditors, and anyone else who needs to know your new address a month before moving.

Keys and Essentials
Sort out the keys to your new place early, pay utility deposits, and take those final meter readings. Get your utilities like water, electricity, and subscriptions transferred or cut off if you don't need them. You might get a refund from some services. Also, let them know where to send the final bills.

Consider Pets and Kiddos
Find a spot for your pets and someone to look after the kids during the move – it's less stressful for everyone.

Grab Your Records
Make sure you have copies of important records and docs, like medical records, prescriptions, school records for the kids, birth certificates, and anything legal.

Overnight Bags
Pack overnight bag for the each family member with must-haves like toiletries, a change of clothes, and snacks.

Priorities
Set up the beds first thing and consider takeout for meals on move day.

Last-Minute Check
Before the moving crew takes your stuff, do a final check to make sure you're not leaving anything behind. Check cupboards, turn off water and power and lock up everything.

Smart Move Date
Don't move out the same day the new owners are moving in. Give yourself a couple of days for a smoother exit and a thorough clean-up.

Planning ahead and taking it slow can save you time and lots of stress. You don't have to unpack everything in a day. Set up a schedule, and take it one room at a time.
